Website Visitor Statistics is Critical to Your Online Marketing

Do you know how many people visited your website last week? Do you know for how long those precious prospects looked at your site? Which is your most popular page? And how did they find your site?

If you have no idea then why bother having a website?

We at Digit@l Idi0m install a stat’ counter in virtually all the sites we build to help the site owner understand their visitor’s habits, search words and browsing sequence. The counter supplies weekly stats’ via email to the website owner. We think it’s the least you should expect! You paid good money for your web site, surely you want to know if and when the site is visited? So let me share a few facts with you.

Damn Statistics! Ok our main website digit@lidiom.co.uk uses advanced visitor statistics from Google Analytics. These are quite comprehensive and best of all they are FREE ! However there are many others available, including statcounter.com. You can learn about the visitor’s search terms, browser usage, time and dates, operating systems, plug-ins and so much more.

Having this data available to you can help you amend/delete web pages or sections of your site that aren’t performing. Or maybe stoke up a better Search Engine Optimisation campaign. You may ‘see’ that the killer home page you spent so long over is causing people to ‘bounce’ (go elsewhere).

Fact or Fiction: Of course stat’s are open to interpretation… but now if you know that the average visitor spends about 1 minute on our site you will want to know why and do something about it. For us nearly 60% bounce (that means they leave as fast as they came) so maybe we need to do more to stop that, maybe the site home page needs a revamp.

We can see that 92% of visitors have Flash Player so we could reasonably safely add some Flash animation.

We attract a lot of new visitors (86%) so 14% must come back again. Is that sufficient for you?

We know that ‘digit@l idiom’ is our best search keyword in Google, so maybe people are learning our name. And second best keyword is ‘website packages’ which ties in with our popular Web Packages page.

62% of our traffic has come from Search Engines and 22% from referring links so maybe our link building is working or do we want to do more in this area?

And it goes on. How you interpret these stat’s is up to you based on the design, content and critically the goals of your website business. But we reckon you need to make sure you measure your site performance somehow.

Too many clients leave it to chance and then think the site is a failure – well it will be if you do nothing or don;t monitor. So get a visitor counter installed on all your web pages and check the stat’s regularly THEN take action where needed!
