No matter where you live, incorporating a little of your surroundings into your home decor is a wonderful idea. If you live in a more dry climate, there are many components of nature that will look gorgeous in your home. Cacti and local grasses (like horsetail or bear) have a natural and rustic look. Be creative with your desert decor by adding rock arrangements or sand. As far as color goes, warm earthy tones work perfectly. It would not hurt (literally) to decide on a silk cactus as opposed to a live one. They are not extremely dangerous, but it would not be a fun afternoon picking out the needles after a child has pulled a cactus plant on top of himself or herself.

As you create flower arrangements, it is important that you try to match the look of the area in which your creation will be placed. The reason for the bouquet should be the overruling factor when considering to design it. For example, when you are designing an arrangement for a funeral, there are some flowers that are natural choices because of their look and meaning, such as tulips and daisies in gentle colors. Silk grasses, unusual and bright flowers, and topiary designs are great if the arrangement is meant to be a housewarming gift or a “get better soon” arrangement. For a more romantic or classy arrangement, use roses. Always keep the recipient in mind as you design floral arrangements. If you are aware of their favorite or least favorite flowers, colors, and overall styles, incorporate the ones they like best into your design. Do not give up if your arrangement does not look quite right at first! When you use silk flowers, you do not have to worry about breaking stems or losing petals as you arrange and rearrange.

When considering real plants, you want to make sure that the plant can get sunlight and water. Real plants naturally attract insects, which could be a problem where you are living. However, there is a degree of fulfillment you get when caring for living things that you cannot have with artificial ones. Silk or artificial plants are great for storage when you are not using them, such as wreaths or seasonal items. They also are lighter and easier to move. If you decide to go with silk plants, judge carefully how realistic they seem. You don’t want someone to walk into the room and instantly know that it is a fake tree or plant. You want it to catch their eye, make them walk up and feel the leaves before they realize that it is artificial. The best compliment an artificial plant can receive is, “I thought it was real!”
