• Secrets to Basement Decorating
  • Basement decorating is something that many homeowners are undertaking these days. In several homes, the basement is a rejected and empty or “junk” space. It’s usually gloomy and stifling. However, it doesn’t have to be like that. You can transform your basement and build an awesome new room if you just plan, design and execute the right way.
  • The basement is actually a tricky place to work with, since it generally has a low ceiling, lacks enough lighting and ventilation, is colder than the rest of the house and has a very small space. To tackle a small basement decorating dilemma, think of a design style that is simple and minimalist. For instance, you could try something more modern. Avoid adding too many “accessories” and instead make the space more utilitarian. Make sure doorways are clear of furniture. Draw the eye to bigger pieces such as a large flat screen TV or huge painting to make the room appear more spacious. Choose colors for your basement decorating project carefully. Choose a monochromatic or “cool” color scheme.
  • Nearly all basements have a lack of natural light. This can be dealt with by installing lots of artificial lighting. Overhead fixtures will give the best illumination, however, you may want to try different shadow effects with floor lamps. Mirrors positioned opposite existing windows can also improve the amount of natural light that enters the room.
  • To make your basement more “breezy”, utilize fans and ventilation systems. You could also create a feeling of being in nature. Try incorporating an aquarium and natural elements such as stone or wood.
  • Water is the biggest issue in nearly all basements. If you reside in an area where the water level is positioned such that flooding can happen, then set a boundary for the types of materials you utilize, such as furniture, rugs and electrical accessories. You could use plastic lawn furniture, which now come in a wide range of colors and designs. If you’re going to use wooden fixtures, try elevating them on bricks so at least there will be less damage if ever flooding occurs. A flood alert system is also a good idea for your basement decorating plan.
