• Learn About Different Types of Rugs
  • We all know how much difference an area rug can make to a living space, enhancing its beauty and highlighting particular areas. But what kind of area rug should you go in for? What are the different types available?
  • There is an enormous range as far as area rugs are concerned – you will be spoilt for choice if you are planning to look for one. Rugs can be categorized based on where they are from or on the material used. Take a look at some of the different kinds of rugs that you can choose from when you want to get a rug to brighten up your home.
  • Would you rather have a handmade Oriental rug or an ordinary one made with the help of a machine? Oriental rugs, which generally come from Iran, India, China, Afghanistan, Turkey and Pakistan can be stunningly beautiful. An Oriental rug is usually hand knotted and the loving labor that goes into it ensures that the rug is extremely durable. In fact, a handmade rug is likely to last half a century longer than its machine made counterparts. In machine made rugs, there is no knotting involved in the manufacturing process. Instead, the fibers of the rug are laid by a machine and latex support is used to hold them together. So the underside of the rug is rough.
  • Generally, a handmade Oriental rug is more expensive than a machine made one but in the long run the former are more cost effective because of their long-lasting strength. This is particularly significant in large households, where there is a lot of wear and tear on a rug, especially if it has been placed in a high traffic area. Also, it is likely that your Oriental rug will have a higher resale value than an ordinary machine made rug. Like wine, a good quality rug can actually increase in value as it gets older, like wine.
  • When it comes to material used, rugs may be broadly classified as wool rugs and synthetic rugs. There are, of course, other materials used to make rugs, but wool is the most common, and has manifold advantages over rugs made of synthetic fibers. Wool rugs are not only beautiful but durable, too.
  • Rugs are also often classified based on their pattern and style. You can find cotton printed rugs, traditional rugs, modern rugs and tribal rugs, each of which has a typical range of designs.
  • Traditional rugs come in old style designs, and have a formal look. Modern rugs are trendy and colorful and are often used as accents in offices. Striking design and bold colors make these rugs very attractive. Tribal rugs are brightly colored too and the colors usually come from natural dyes. Tribal rug usually have arresting designs and can draw the eye even in any surrounding. Cotton printed rugs are elegant and smart, and come in a wide variety of colors that can be pleasantly soothing to the eye.
  • These are just a few of the kinds of rugs available – there are dozens more in all kinds of designs and styles. So if you are thinking of getting a rug, be prepared to look at loads of rugs before you can make a decision!
