- Area Rugs 101
- There are few things that add colour and character to an interior space as much as a rug. Today, people don’t just use rugs in the living room and dining area – you can use them in bedrooms, study areas, family rooms and even bathrooms. They don’t have to be expensive to look great, and the colours and textures add depth to any room.
- A rug can truly do wonders for a room. One of the nicest things about an attractive rug is that it can be used as a focal point in a particular space. Draw your visitor’s eye with a striking rug, highlight a specific area, or lead attention away from the deficiencies in an awkward area.
- Rugs are also great ways to delineate different areas in an open plan home. The can also be used to indicate seating areas.
- The common materials used for rugs include wool, silk, nylon, polypropylene or olefin or a blend of any of these materials. Silk and wool rugs are costlier than the synthetic rugs, but they are beautiful, and perhaps a little effort will help you find a good deal on a soft silk or wool rug. If you care about the environment, you might want to go in for a rug made of natural fibres such as sea grass, mountain grass, sisal, bamboo, hemp and cotton.
- The kind of rug you choose is down to your personal preferences and the shared tastes of your family. Make sure, though, that the size of the rug is appropriate to the space available – a too-large rug can make a room look crowded, while a rug that is too small gets lost. And as far as colours are concerned, you should see that the rug either matches or contrasts pleasingly with your other furnishings and general colour scheme of the room.
- Make sure you place your rug well, with no wrinkles or folds that can trip someone up. A rug should not be placed with its corners sticking out into a doorway – this can be dangerous, too, for an unwary person who is entering the room. When you are putting a rug under a dining table, go in for one that has at least four feet on all the sides around the table, so that the chairs can be placed well inside the area covered by the rug. Furniture on a rug used in a sitting area should be laid in such a way that those who are sitting down will have both feet on the rug.
- There is an enormous variety of rugs available nowadays, in an incredible range of materials, colours, textures, designs, shapes and styles. And with prices that range widely, you are sure to find the right rugs for your living spaces. Synthetic rugs start at less than $300 when they are about 5 feet by 8 feet in size, and rugs made from natural fibres are even more reasonably priced. A good rug will be strong and durable, so it is a good investment that will give you years of value.
