- 8 Room Killing Decorating Mistakes to Avoid
- Can’t figure out why your room is so lacking? You don’t have to put up with sad little spaces. Arm yourself with the facts and you’ll have the power to save yourself from these worn-out decorating mistakes that make your rooms suffer.
- Wall paints smudges on trim molding. Talk about tacky looking! Your house isn’t a kindergarten project. Use painters tape when painting or wipe the smudges immediately with at damp cloth. Once latex paint dries it’s on there for good. Once dry only a paint remover will take it off.
- Inadequate lighting. How can you possibly enjoy a room when you can’t see? Most rooms will benefit greatly from both overhead lighting and task lamps.
- No conversation area. That’s one way to get rid of your guests! You need at least two seats within 36″ of one another to create a comfortable speaking/visiting distance. And you wonder why no one ever comes to visit!
- No height variance. All the furniture and all the accessories in the room are the same height. Boring! Break it up already. To create height, try these. Use plant stands, plant hangers, table lamps or tall floor lamps. Accentuate your tall windows with toppers or long curtains. Add tall furniture pieces like book cases or a commanding entertainment center.
- No coffee tables, end tables or night stands. Take off your coat and stay for a while! Heck, if your going to live there at least make yourself comfortable. Give yourself, your family and your guests a place to put things. Like what you say? Only the remote, your coffee cup, your book, your lamp. Only the stuff you use everyday!
- Stark bare blank boring walls. Need I say more? Do yourself a favor and hang some actual artwork already!
- Not making your fireplace a focal point for fear of competing with the television. You didn’t buy the house for the TV. You bought the house because you fell in love with the fireplace! Play with furniture arrangement until you can comfortably view both of them.
- No focal point at all. Very, very dull. If your room doesn’t have any great architectural features, try playing up a large window. No large window? Create a focal point with your furniture. It could be the master bed, a large entertainment center or a faux fireplace. Do something or your room will feel dead!
- There’s no need to live in a style deprived environment. It’s your space, your home, your life. Take control. Fix it. Love it. Impress your friends. Impress yourself!
